HOW TO FIND YOUR STYLE IN 5 STEPS

We are surrounded by fashion in our era. Which makes finding your own style really tiring. So you generally buy the same type of clothes and call it a day. Or you love some type of clothing, but you are certain that you will have nowhere to wear that to. With this, you’ll actually find your style and incorporate it to your everyday life.

Let’s dive in!

1-Break your Fashion Stigmas

Fashion shouldn’t scare you. It shouldn’t push you from your comfort zone or make you uncomfortable. Trends always come and go. You shouldn’t be following them if you don’t feel comfortable in it. You should not wear what everyone else is wearing. And definitely not fast-fashion pieces that pushes you to wear similar things that will only last for a year.

Fashion is not hard. It is not something you should force yourself to be everyday. It comes when you actually start to love your wardrobe. You can be fashionable even in your sweatsuits. It is finding and wearing things that suits you the best. Not forcing you to dress up everyday but dressing down and feeling amazing in that too.

When people say that someone has good fashion, others generally think that they dress up extra or take a lot of time to get ready. Well, the truth is, if you actually find what suits you and what makes you feel good, you will be fashionable in no time with close to no effort. Go through some fashion magazines or scroll through social media to look for a style that caughts your eye. Does it look extra? Is it a piece from a runway show? If yes, you can always make it simpler.

2-Observe your buying habits

What are some pieces that you keep going back to? Do you buy more pants or skirts? Is your pants skinny fit or loose? What are some things that go well with your body type? (For example, if you are a pear shape, meaning bigger on the bottom, you may find yourself leaning more into looser pants since they make you look slimmer) Do you buy the same shirt type in 10 different colours? If so, you may be too afraid to try new things. But don’t worry, you are in the right place!

3-Have some special pieces

You probably have a couple of pieces in your wardrobe that you feel great in. They fit you amazingly, or the colour makes your face look younger or even some details make it unique. Observe it. What makes you love that piece so much? Is it the colour, fit, details or any patterns? Choose what you love about it so you can actually start looking for more pieces that have the same elements you love.

If you love the pattern, try to find items with the same pattern type that is in a more affordable range. Do you love the giant sleeve detail in your night dress? Look for that sleeve detail in a toned down way for your next top. With so many manufacturers and brands, I guarantee that you will find what you are looking for.

After doing these three steps; I would suggest you actually answer these questions before go on to buy anything:

● What are your favourite colours that you think really suits you? (Keep in mind that warm toned skin generally looks better in warm toned colours or cold tone with cold toned colours - stay tuned for my post of colour theory if you are interested-)

● What type of fitting are you comfortable with?

( For example: Bodycon dress or a flowy type of dress?

    Skinny jeans or boyfriend jeans?

Low cut necklines or back cleavage?

What type of shoes do you wear? Heels or not?

And remember that none of these have to only be one choice. You may like both in different outfits. )

● Do you like patterns or simple one coloured pieces?

● Do you like layering on clothes?

● How would you like your silhouette to look like? Synch in the waist for a more feminine look or more of a straight one?

● What are your favourite fabrics? (Get yourself familiar with the feeling of a fabric. Do you like it to hug you or do you like more of a loose fit that will follow your curves?)

● Which part of your body are you more comfortable with showing? (Maybe you love your legs, then mini skirts or skinny fit jeans would be more your style!)

● Do you want to wear a piece for years to come or do you actually change it often? (This shows your buying habits, which would help you to plan your money!)

● What type of climate do you live in?

4-Manage your money

Before you splurge on that giant dress that you will only wear on New Year’s Eve, think about “cost per wear”. Meaning you should spend more money on your basic pieces or pieces that you wear all the time more, because they should be better quality to stand the test of time. If you are too busy to actually transfer your items into another bag every morning, why should you spend money on buying 3 more bags when you can buy a better quality bag that you will carry all the time? Why should you buy designer neon green stilettos when you can buy a cheaper one and spend the money on buying better quality everyday black boots?(If your style is actually wearing more stilettos, then think vice-versa) Be specific in shopping rather than looking for instant attraction in a shop for a piece that you may not even wear.

5-Don’t be afraid to change/modify some pieces to fit you better.

If you love a piece but it is loose in the waist when you want it to be tighter, why not change it? If you don't like the shape or pattern, change it. Cut it, draw it etc. If you are comfortable with a sewing machine, then you can learn how to modify them. If you are not however, go to a tailor. A lot of people actually think that tailors only work on special event dresses or suits. No! They are actually cheap and pretty talented when you know what you want. Find a good tailor in your area and modify the clothing that doesn’t fit you perfectly. They are there for that.

Also, undergarments actually play a big role in our general perfect fit and look. They should never be seen from the outside if you dress correctly. I would suggest that you explore the world of shapewear. I will write about it as well in my next posts.

If you have come this far, you should have a really good idea about your style. Keep searching, keep reading and keep incorporating new types of clothing to experiment. Fashion should be fun! It should also compliment your own body, not turn you into someone else. This should be your unique style that suits you the best, fashion is not a question with only one solution. So, be bold and be you!
